The Hillmen put five goals past the Saints for the second time this season in a comfortable victory at Surrey Street.

Earlier in the season it was Darren Hamilton who netted three time in the games but last Saturday’s hat-trick came from a most unlikely source – right-back Dave Young.

A couple of his goals were outrageous flukes, but North End were still well worth the three points.

An entertaining game looked on the cards from the start, with both sides starting brightly and two early goals proved the point.

Firstly, on eight minutes, Young looked to deliver a cross from the right, 30 yards from goal, and his curling effort came onto keeper McCall straight out of the sun, but without a cap, he lost the flight and the ball headed into the top corner.

Three minutes later there was parity, when Young was robbed by Handley, who was then brought down by the diving Cooper, allowing Kay to level from the spot.

Glossop took the lead again on 26 minutes when Hurst’s clever cut back left Darren Hamilton with a simple finish from six yards.

The third came in what would be unusual circumstances, were they not a repeat of what was seen 30 minutes earlier as Young’s cross from 40 yards dropped over the keeper’s head and in off the far post.

He completed his hat-trick 10 minutes into the second half when Jones was penalised for handball, allowing Young to score from the spot.

Morris hit a shot from the edge of the area wide, while Hurst should have scored after doing the hard work, controlling on the turn at the near post, but blasting over.

However, he made amends on when Bailey played him in behind the defence and he rounded the keeper to score.

As they had done on Merseyside, North End’s concentration dropped late in the game as Dyson headed home

It was, however, a comfortable three points in their quest to find a league position they feel they should be occupying.
