GLOSSOP Judo Club and everyone at St Philip Howard Catholic Sports College are celebrating after Ryan Phillips was called up for the England squad.

The 14-year-old Simmondley youngster, who won a silver medal at this year’s British Judo Championship, was called up for the England under-17s squad.

He had been waiting for a month to find out if he had been chosen or not following a year in which he won bronze at the British Schools Championship, the Welsh under-20s competition and the Heart of England Championships.

There was also a gold medal at the North West Closed event before silver at the British event.

Ryan said: "It was great when I read the opening line telling me I’d been selected. I’m really looking forward to the extra training and coaching and it’ll be great to wear the England badge."

Dad and coach Steve added: "I’m really pleased for him, he’s worked hard and produced some great judo, culminating with this year’s excellent results.

"He really deserves his place in the squad, he’s had to fight hard in some very large groups over the years and he’s got his call-up not just with determination, but skilful judo."
