Ashton had the better of the first-half conditions with a strong wind at their backs, but it was the on-form Yorkshire side that had an early effort from Kelvin Bleau that went over the bar.

This game looked to be heading to a replay until Griffin curled a superb free kick from 20 yards into the top corner.

With the wind howling and the grass grabbing at the players’ ankles it was never going to be pretty but the Celts were on top throughout and thoroughly deserved their first away victory in four attempts.

The game was pretty much over as a genuine contest after only eight minutes, by which time Mossley already held a two-goal advantage against a Wakefield team that had been hurriedly rebuilt over the preceding few days.
