Glossop NE 2 Stewarts & Lloyds 1: A MAGNIFICENT day for the Hillmen, one which will live long in the memory of those present, saw them through to the fifth round of the FA Vase for the first time in their history.
The large crowd, who with their songs and inflatables had created a party atmosphere, should have had plenty to cheer during the game, but eventually were grateful to a 92nd minute header from Dave Hodges to seal the win.
Hodges had terrorised the visitors from the first whistle to the last, bookending the game with his goals having earlier given Glossop a second minute lead.
A through ball was threaded behind the full-back, allowing Hodges to sprint at goal and slip his shot under the keeper.
The visitors could not deal with the home side as Morris had a shot deflected off target and Dave Young curled a free kick just wide after Hodges was brought down on the edge of the area.
Jay Gorton dipped a 25-yarder just over the bar before Darren Hamilton’s six-yard shot was somehow turned onto the bar by the keeper.
A second goal looked inevitable as numerous crosses were flashed across the face of goal, but it remained a one-goal game at the break.
The second half started in the same way as Parker miscontrolled a cross in the first 60 seconds before Hamilton somehow put a free header wide.
Hodges had a shot blocked for a corner, and from the resultant flag kick Young’s effort was cleared off the line.
Then, out of nowhere, the visitors enjoyed a minute of play that saw them draw level as, in the 64th minute, Matthews’ shot beat Ash Gotham, only for Kelvin Lugsden to clear off the line.
A minute later though, his fierce shot was parried upwards by North End’s young keeper, but although the ball appeared to be going over the bar, it looped and bounced into the net.
Glossop retook the initiative but the visitors’ goal again led a charmed life with Rick Bailey hitting the side-netting, Young firing over, Gorton twice coming close and Tom Allen finding the keeper’s midriff from six yards.
Fans were steeling themselves for extra time when Sam Hind won a corner, which Young curled in and Hodges capped an incredible performance by heading home.
The crowd and players celebrated with as much relief as euphoria, in the knowledge that the last 16 beckoned.
