It has now emerged that the firm’s licence was being revoked by a traffic commissioner following a public inquiry amid concerns about the firm’s financial standing.

Supporters of the Mottram-Tintwistle bypass are hoping job creation will clinch the case for the road to be built.

The bypass was left off the list of road schemes given the go-ahead by the government last year. Chancellor George Osborne committed £5bn to similar schemes in the next spending review, but that won't be until 2015/16.

Strong winds closed Woodhead Pass to drivers. The A628 was shut between Gun Inn traffic lights in Mottram, and Flouch roundabout, Langsett.

The Highways Agency said the road, which links Glossop with Sheffield, was due to re-open this morning once the winds have reduced.

An overturned lorry led to long delays for traffic trying to cross the Pennines. The A628 Woodhead Pass was closed between the Gun Inn traffic lights and Langsett when the vehicle toppled over in high winds.

The accident, on the South Yorkshire side of the pass, happened on Wednesday night.

They're no mugs at Bay Tree Books. Sarah Woolley and Sarah Lovell, who run the bookshop on High Street West, started selling a bespoke china mug which carries the words ‘I’d rather be in Glossop’, a few months ago.

It was such a success – with hundreds flying off the shelves – that they have introduced another, with an Ordnance Survey map of the area on it.

Safety appeal as car crashes into salon for the third time

A driver lost control on ice and crashed into Atlanta Hair Care on Hadfield Road, Hadfield.

While no one was injured, it is the third time a car has careered into Peter May’s business after railings were removed from outside his shop in the late 1980s. Now Peter is asking the council to look again at installing bollards or other safety features outside his business before someone is killed or seriously injured.
