A MAINTENANCE worker was killed after suffering severe head injuries while working on machinery at a factory.
The 50-year-old man, of Denton, was working on a section of the machine at box makers Glossop Carton and Print Ltd in Padfield. Initial reports suggest the machine started to operate and his head became embedded in the equipment.
His body was taken to the mortuary at Chesterfield Royal Hospital on Friday afternoon and police have informed the coroner's office. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive is now underway.
Firefighters from blue watch at Glossop station attended, acting on initial reports that 'a male had got his fingers trapped in a piece of machinery.' It was only when they arrived that they discovered the full extent of the horror.
They informed the police and used spanners and other equipment to dismantle the machine at the Raymond Joseph Works' mill on Platt Street.
Bosses at the company would not confirm whether the man was an employee or was working for an outside contractor at the time of the incident, which occurred in the middle of the morning on Friday.
But they did issue the following statement: "A fatal accident has occurred over the weekend. The company is co-operating with the Health and Safety Executive in terms of its investigating of the incident. This will take a number of days.
"Until the investigations are complete we will not fully understand what has occurred."
Police were carrying out a fingerprint identification to confirm the man's identity as The Advertiser went to press.

YOU don't know the facts and nobody will until HSE have conducted a full enquiry. Therefore, wait for the enquiry before you pass any judgments. But then again, who are YOU to judge Clive.
As you said you heard about the accident via the grapevine. The problem with second hand information is that it ALWAYS becomes distorted as it gets passed from person to person.

I am in daily contact with people who have lost people in these similar circumstances and the cover up involved these incidents is totally disgusting. My son was not killed in the workplace but he was killed through total neglect by the biggest organisation around.
It is so easy to blame the deceased because they cannot answer for themselves and by the time the family are ready to ask questions it is normally too late because evidence has gone missing and the inquest as quietly gone by.
Why do people jump in, I know you could never imagine the families pain because I could not have done before I lost my son but you comment was really out of order. Would you have had this attitude if it was a member of your family or would you want a proper investigation taking place before conclusions were reached?
Pleased consider the feelings of family members because they will already be suffering enough pain.

Remember all engineers, next time you override that gaurd on that machine, keep your fingers well clear!
I did not know this person who was involved in this accident, but i will, for what it is worth say how sorry i am to his family and time will heal all. remember the good times of laughter not the sad times of sorrow. God bless x x x
