Hotel will help boost economy

Part of Howard Town Mill is being converted into a hotel

Glossop's new hotel will provide a big boost to the local economy, it is being claimed.

Not only will it bring 15 new jobs, people staying at the new Travelodge will spend nearly £1m in the first year it is open, according to the budget hotel chain.

Work has begun creating a 62-bedroom Travelodge within Howard Town Mill on Victoria Street in the town centre. It is due to open in August.

A spokesman for the hotel chain said: “It will bring £977,000 a year to the local economy. This tourism investment figure is calculated by combining the average occupancy figure with the £36 per person spent in the local economy while staying at a new Travelodge in its first year of operation.”

Mike Ralph, property director of RED Property Services – agent for Peveril Securities Ltd, which won planning permission for the overall £7m scheme at the former cotton mill – said the figure sounded right.

He said: “Hotels do get intelligence about what people go on to do while they stay with them – they travel on public transport, go out for meals and shop locally. I’ve heard of similar figures on other schemes.”

The bedrooms will be on the first and second floors of the mill following a conversion. The development is to be anchored by an M & S Simply Food store covering 20,000 sq ft along with a Wetherspoons, Dominos Pizza and a Mountain Warehouse outdoor sportswear and equipment outlet.

Mr Ralph added: “All these have a target completion date of July.”

The scheme’s 49 apartments have also been sold and the scheme will include a 140-space landscaped car park at the ex-mill, which dates from the 1820s.

Peveril and RED stepped in when the original developer. B&R Developments, went into administration in 2009.

The Glossop hotel will be one of 41 Travelodges opening this year, costing £246m.
