ANOTHER long-established name is set to vanish from Glossop’s high street.

Garsides furniture store is to cease trading at the end of May after nearly 60 years based in the town.

It follows nearby shoe shop Stead and Simpson closing its doors in February.

Owner Paul Sharples says the reason is simple.

"Lack of business. Business has been in decline since 2000. I come from a family of retailers. My brother has three stores and I had four but over the last 10 years trade has been slowing down. And last year when the roadworks started and the pavements were being dug up that didn’t help. I’m sure it will look nice when it’s all finally done, but August to October/November is the busiest time in the furniture trade. It’s the icing on the cake but we were cut off, people couldn’t get to us and we didn’t do sufficient business. I’ve had to make two hard-working and long-serving members of staff redundant. It’s very sad," he said.

However his shop in Hyde — Oakland’s — will continue to trade.

Garsides was founded by Mr ‘Budge’ Garside — who is believed to still live in the Glossop area — nearly 60 years ago. He later sold the business to his manager Harold Walton, who in turn sold it to Mr Sharples about 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, High Peak Council’s scheme to encourage folk ‘to Shop Smart, Shop Local’ by providing chances to win cash prizes, ended last month.

However a retailer’s ‘toolkit’, which includes marketing tips and details of sources of help and advice, is still available to business folk on 0845 1297777.
