POLICE have been granted an extra seven days to question five people arrested in anti-terror raids.

Four men - including an Islamic preacher from Deane, Bolton - were seized in operations across Greater Manchester, and a fifth at Heathrow Airport.

They are being questioned over allegations they were involved in recruiting young British Muslims for terror training in camps in Afghanistan.

The swoop - in the early hours of Monday - followed a police operation lasting more than a year.

Assistant Chief Constable Dave Thompson said: "We understand that this is an incredibly sensitive time for the communities affected by this investigation and that they are keen for a resolution as soon as possible. We share this view.

"The arrests were the result of 15 months of investigation and having now made those arrests, it is important that those arrested are given an opportunity to answer questions concerning these issues.

"We have been granted an extension after a rigorous and independent scrutiny by the court. I would stress that we will not keep anyone in custody longer than is absolutely necessary and this will be continually under review throughout the next seven days.

"I would also like to reassure communities that we are continuing to work closely with local partners and key contacts to ensure that any relevant information is shared as quickly as possible."
