A GORTON shopkeeper and his assistant have been ordered to pay almost £1,400 for selling cigarettes to underage teenagers.

Mohammed Aslam, who owns Kash News, in Reddish Lane, and his employee, Kashif Rashid, were caught out by trading standards officers who sent two 16-year-old boys into the shop following claims they were selling cigarettes to youngsters.

One of the teenagers asked for a packet which Rashid handed over without asking for identification.

The pair failed to show up for a hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court, where they were found guilty.

Aslam was fined £350 and ordered to pay costs of about £370, while Rashid was fined £350 and ordered to pay just under £300.
