A group of young people from across Rochdale have returned from an Easter Holiday break away with a difference.
Teenagers representing local secondary schools took part in a residential break to North Wales - along with pupils from Oldham - aimed at promoting cohesion among young people.
More than 80 youngsters went on the 5-day 'Fusion 2008' trip to the Conway Centre in Anglesey and took part in a range of activities with getting to know each other - and then getting on with each other - the first priority.
The young people were split into six groups and they did all the activities in these groups which helped to bond friendships and bridge stereotypes and divides. The programme included canoeing, climbing, high ropes and raft building. There was also a show featuring dance, drama and music that was organised over the course of a day and performed in the evening.
Senior youth officer at Rochdale Council, Dave Baker said: "All the feedback we've had from the young people has been really positive. It was an exhausting few days but I think everyone got a lot out of the trip. There were stories of how stereotypes and fears of other 'types' of young people had been dispelled - and tales of how fears of heights and water had been conquered!"
"Most exciting were the testimonies of how young people from all over Rochdale and Oldham, from different economic and cultural backgrounds, had come together and achieved a sense of belonging and understanding that they never thought possible."
Fusion 2008 was a first for Rochdale and it's hoped similar schemes will be run in future.
