A MAN who falsely claimed he was shot at resulting in a suspect being charged with attempted murder and firearm offences has been jailed.
Yasir Khan, 28, of Shepherd Street, Bury, was jailed for 12 months at Bolton Crown Court after admitting perverting the course of justice.
Khan had accused a 22-year-old man of firing shots at him because he was a witness to a serious assault where another man was shot.
Police said charges against the man were dropped when it became clear Khan had lied.
Det Sgt John Charlton said more than 2,000 hours of police time were wasted. He said: "An innocent person faced the prospect of spending many years in jail because of Khan's lies. We think he even went so far as to plant a bullet at the scene of the alleged shooting.
"Accusing somebody of firing a gun at you is very serious, and we will investigate the circumstances fully.
"We trusted Khan, but he completely disregarded that."
The case was mounted after a 30-year-old man was attacked with machetes and shot on Heywood Street, Bury, in 2007.
Khan and another man were less seriously injured. Six men were subsequently arrested and charged.
Khan then named a seventh man as being involved {ndash} then later accused the same man of shooting at him in Pimhole Road, Bury.
Police said Khan later admitted lying and said he had been told to frame the man.
Police said the case against the men accused of the machete and gun attack subsequently collapsed.
