A LABOUR councillor who was arrested on suspicion of raping a 16-year-old girl will not face any charges.

Cllr Asaf Ali (right), who represents the Alexandra Ward in Oldham, was arrested on June 5 last year following allegations that the girl had been raped in Oldham. He was released on bail pending further inquiries. He was told by police this week that he was no longer under suspicion. The 36-year-old had always strongly denied the allegations.

He said: "I am glad it is over. I look forward to resuming my duties full time and wish to take this opportunity to thank my constituents and all those who have supported me during this difficult time."
