THIS is what the building that will revolutionise breast cancer
care across Greater Manchester will look like. Due to be built next
year, the é14.5m Nightingale Centre and Genesis Prevention Centre
at Wythenshawe Hospital is designed to accommodate all the stages
of cancer care - from cutting edge research to diagnosis and
treatment. And this is one of the first artist's impressions of the
centre. Currently, patients are forced to move between departments
and even hospitals for each stage of their treatment. But the new
centre will cater for all of their needs under one roof. The
building, designed by Gilling Dodd Architects, will house
revolutionary two-view digital mammography machines, which can take
two pictures simultaneously to create a much more accurate x-ray of
the breast at the screening stage. It will house dozens of doctors
and nurses, as well as scientists, to care for and do research on
patients from across Greater Manchester. One wing will provide a
home for the Genesis Centre, which is leading the country in trying
to prevent breast cancer. South Manchester Primary Care Trust,
which is jointly funding the centre with the Genesis Appeal, is
also funding a Family History Clinic, which will uncover people's
family trees to work out if they are at risk. Prof Gareth Evans, a
specialist in breast cancer care, said: "We are straining for space
at our Withington HQ and with increased demand in the next few
years we simply need more room. "The centre will create a nucleus
for research and treatment, a real buzz, and turn us from leading
researchers in the country to international leaders in our field.
"It will allow us to attract world class researchers to look into
aspects like diet and exercise and how they can help to prevent
breast cancer." He added: "The disease is happening at three times
the rate it did 80 years ago, so this is a modern disease that we
can do something about."
