NEW VENTURE... Abdul Younas, right, with his new shop Valley News near the Valley Centre

A young family has opened a newsagents in the shadow of Rawtenstall’s Valley Centre.

But the unsociable working hours are not a problem for former cabbie Abdul Younas.

Abdul has opened Valley News, on the corner of Bacup Road and James Street, so he can spend more time with his wife Zahraa and 18-month old son.

The shop is opposite the bus station and on the side of the Valley Centre.

Abdul, of Bacup Road, Rawtenstall said: "This is the first time I’ve opened a newsagents.

"I was a cab driver for about five years but I fancied a bit of a change.

"It’s not that bad going from 17-hour shifts to this because this is a day shift and I still get to deal with customers and am able to spend more time with my family.

"Especially with all the talk about the Valley Centre closing for so long and not being able to bring any light to Rawtenstall I thought this would be good.

"We are getting some good feedback from the bus drivers and people saying it’s really good and we should have opened years ago."

At last, something positive in a much needed boost to a very drab and dreary town.
I was myself a taxi driver for many years throughout the Rossendale Valley, and remember very well just how busy Rawtenstall used to be,day AND night.
This particular place where Mr Younas has set up shop,as stated in the report is the former 'Connections'taxi booking office and anyone who visited it before its excellent refurbishment would have noticed it had considerably deteriorated somewhat over the years, not a good thing, when that's the first thing you clap eyes on when alighting local bus transport if your visiting the area.
But,times have certainly changed, and once again I wish Mr Younas and his family luck in their new business venture.
