Currying favour with the critics

SERVING UP SUCCESS...Ejaz Aslam, Abdul Subhan and Gazi Rahman a tasty dish

An Indian restaurant has been crowned the best in the North West at a national awards ceremony.

Ashton's Indian Ocean picked up the North West restaurant of the year gong at the first English Curry Awards.

The restaurant, on Stamford Street East, can add the accolade to its already bulging trophy cabinet which includes being named as the best restaurant in the north of England in the Cobra Good Curry Guide and in the Best in Britain awards.

Nahim Aslam owns the restaurant which first opened in 1993.

His team of 12 chefs pride themselves on serving up a mix of authentic Indian, Punjabi and Kashmiri dishes to eat in or take away.

The kitchen has also been home to some record-breaking feats including building the world’s tallest tower of poppadoms at a staggering 5ft 1.5ins.

Nahim said: "We’re very proud to have won this award.

"Being nominated for and winning any award is a real honour but to be a winner at the first English Curry Awards is something special.

"We work so hard week in, week out at the restaurant to make sure we constantly produce high quality food and service and to be recognised for that on an industry level is the icing on the cake."

The awards attracted more than 500 industry professionals from around the country at Manchester’s Sheridan Suite.

Shane Lake, managing director of sponsors hungryhouse.co.uk, said: "The awards were a runaway success and have a set a fantastic precedent for the years to come.

"There was a fantastic turnout and an electric atmosphere inside the Sheridan Suite which represented the vibrant and varied talents within the room."

The Indian Ocean beat off competition from around the region including Oldham’s Blue Tiffin and Indigo in Romiley.
