Pearce: Cole deal close

STUART Pearce expects Andy Cole to sign his one-year contract extension 'fairly quickly'.

The 34-year-old striker is sidelined for the season with a knee injury but had already agreed a new deal in principle with Manchester City, which Pearce expects to be concluded shortly.

"Everything is agreed," said Pearce.

"It is just a case of waiting for Andy to sign it. His agent has the paperwork but we expect it to be done fairly quickly."

Although Cole will play no part in Saturday's trip to Tottenham, Pearce hopes to have midfielder Claudio Reyna back from a shoulder injury and captain Sylvain Distin returns from suspension.

I can't believe we are offering a contract to someone who is crocked. Knees do not repair easily, especially at 34. Have we learnt nothing from the Robbie Fowler fiasco?

When will we ever learn?. No club would offer Cole Reyna and Weaver contract with their injury records.
No wonder we are broke, and Pearces
credibility is getting worse by the day.

Cole started off the season very well but he was rushed back for his first injury and that has done him for the season. At 34 is it worth paying him 40k a week when next season the chances are he will miss just as many games as he plays.

C'mon people, especially Harris! Who else would you bring in and more importantly, with what money? Cole may not have the Vassell pace and is indeed one of the oldest members, however he is still scoring goals isn't he? With our current financial state we just have to do with the players we've got, although I don't really think of our current team as a total mess, quite the opposite and we're not talking about injuries now. We have players who even play for their own country, like Dunne, Samaras, Reyna, Sun Jihai, James, Thatcher... Sure, some of our lads are clearly not Premiership quality but this is how it is. Surely you can't blame Pearce for everything, it is up to the lads to make the difference within 90 minutes and indeed, since Pearce took over our game is looking much better.

Cole is a good player but any Manager worth his salt would have realised a 35 year old will not play anywhere near 40 games in a season so why release Fowler. Pearce is showing his naivety.
