Accrington Stanley v Oxford United postponed

Stanley's home fixture against Oxford United this weekend has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

A pitch inspection on Friday morning found that the Crown Ground surface was unplayabale. The fixture will now take place on Tuesday 27 March, kick-off at 7.45pm.

Stanley in talks with Paul Cook over manager job

Cook, 44, had lengthy discussions with the Reds board of chairman Ilyas Khan, director Peter Marsden and chief executive Rob Heys this week.

Cook, who helped Stanley clinch promotion to the Football League in 2006 as a player and is currently manager of Irish side Sligo, was believed to be keen to step into John Coleman’s footsteps but there were a few stumbling blocks in the negotiations.

Bryan Hughes admits his contract talks are still ongoing – but are on a temporary hold while the manager situation is sorted out.

Hughes, League Two’s Player of the Month for December, says he wants a contract with the Reds – after signing on non-contract terms late last year – and the only delay is while the board are tied up with the new manager hunt.

Chief executive Rob Heys said they had more than 60 applicants for the job following John Coleman’s departure to Rochdale 10 days ago. Such names as Ronnie Moore, Paul Cook and Sammy McIlroy have been mentioned in the speculation around the vacancy.

Heys admitted it’s been a week of contrasts with the players at a low on Monday with the news of John Coleman and Jimmy Bell’s switch to Rochdale – after personal terms and compensation were agreed with the duo contracted to the Reds until 2015 – but the Crown Ground was buzzing on Tuesday as the players got behind the new regime.
