Church duo Levi Wolfenden and Nasser Hussain were in the prizes at the Lancashire League presentation evening at Burnley FC on Friday.

Lancashire spinner Gary Keedy presented the prizes with Lancashire displaying the county championship-winning trophy alongside the many Lancashire League awards.

Rishton start new professional hunt

Rishton are the hunt for a new professional after releasing Will Driver from his contract.

The Blackburn Road club had snapped up the former Accrington paid man in August after he had enjoyed a good season in the Ribblesdale League with Read.

Accrington kept what little pressure they could on leaders Lowerhouse by beating Haslingden but the Burnley outfit have a 27-point lead and Jimmy Hayhurst’s side have only three, possibly four, fixtures remaining.

Accrington will get a game in hand if the weather behaves this weekend but the chances are that even that extra game will not be enough to prevent Lowerhouse gathering the points they require, barring a collapse like the one that afflicted Haslingden’s run-in two years ago.

Church mainstay Andrew Bentley reckons that Sunday’s derby match at home to Accrington was just what the doctor ordered to banish any lingering Worsley Cup blues.

Church snap up professional Anwar for next season

Church have re-signed Saeed Anwar as professional for the 2012 season.

Anwar has played a big part in the team’s success on the field this season with Church not only reaching the Worsley Cup final but also looking set to achieve its highest league position since 2004 when they finished runners-up.

It's difficult to imagine a cricket season without Gerard Metcalf playing. When the old stager finally hangs up his boots – and he hasn’t set a date just yet – he will have at least 37 seasons’ worth of vivid and satisfying memories of senior league cricket to look back on.

Metcalf, still turning out with distinction for Oswaldtwistle Immanuel, came to the fore with a swashbuckling 126 for his only other club, Church and Oswaldtwistle, against East Lancs at Alexandra Meadows in 1979.

Thorneyholme Road President Peter Barratt, Graham Lloyd’s wife Sharon and fans Norah and Stewart Graham are among those linked to Accrington Cricket Club who have lost their lives in 2011.

Form book is turned upside down

Rishton chairman Alan Craven thought it was game over when leaders Lowerhouse needed two runs off the final two overs and 16-year-old Ali Sartaj dropped a catch.

He should have had more faith in his side who upset the form book by beating the leaders for a second straight win.

League trophy drawing nearer for Baxenden

Andy Caunce’s side face Cherry Tree and, if they take maximum points there and third-placed Barnoldswick beat title challengers Read, it will be Bash who will be massive winners on the day.

Tucker: We let people down

Sam Tucker admitted that while there was final gloom, Sunday did represent a success for Church Cricket Club.

He and the rest of the players said they felt like they had let everyone down after all the effort the club had put into staging the Worsley Cup final at Blackburn Road against Ramsbottom.
