Rush hour commuters are facing tram chaos after a power line failure.
Metrolink services are suspended between Altrincham and Old Trafford with knock-on delays on the Bury line.
The problem has been caused when overhead line failed between Dane Road and Sale at around 5pm.
Trams services between Old Trafford and Piccadilly and Bury are still running and replacement bus services will be operating between Trafford Bar and Altrincham, calling at all affected Metrolink stops.
The Eccles line is unaffected.
Anyone with a valid Metrolink ticket can also travel on the 263 bus service and staff are on hand at city centre and Altrincham line stops to help passengers.
Philip Purdy, GMPTE’s Metrolink director, said: “Technicians are currently at the scene assessing the situation and we will be carrying out a thorough investigation into what has happened.
“In the meantime all our energies are focused on supporting passengers and fixing the fault.”
Tram bosses could not confirm how long the delays will be, or when the network will be running again.
Passengers should check www.metrolink.co.uk for updates.

The trams always crawl out of Dane Road, going towards Manchester, for about 100 metres before accelerating.

Since I switched to the tram I was late on countless occasions and had to throw two suits away due to chewing gum that was on the seats. I was also getting irratated by smokers, ankle deep litter and foul mouthed passengers.
The government introduced the scrappage scheme in order to get people back on the roads and using cars again (mixed signal as I thought they wanted less car journeys!) plus they lowered to VAT so they made it very attractive to get back on the road again so this is what IO did.
I have never been late since so my message to you all is to get a car if you prefer reliability.
This will also alleviate the stress and strains of overcrowding on trams so people who can't afford a car can use it in more spacious surroundings. If you can afford a car use it and make it better for those that can't.
Same with the NHS. I am no strain on it as I go private so in the long run I am saving the NHS money and freeing up treatment for others.

I use the train from Rochdale these days, yesterday express to Manchester 15 minutes.
WIll the tram beat that, of course it wont, will probably be broken down somewhere.
